Chickens, Holiday, Injury

Our first injury

Well, it was bound to happen..I just wasn’t fully prepared for it.

We have a spot in the fencing that is loose. We had a Silkie get out the other day and by the time Matthew was able to get it back in, he was limping a little. Not a big deal, we were just going to watch it.

I went out this afternoon for a feed and water check (and to bring them strawberries…) and said Silkie was laying by the gate, one leg sprawled up front and one behind him, unable to really move.

I scooped him up and brought him inside. Gave him a bath and a blow dry, food and water (and strawberry) and got a better look. Unfortunately I still can’t locate the exact place that is injured. If I leave him alone, he wobbles back and forth but never stands. If I prop the left leg (injured one) under him and straighten his toes, he can sit just fine.. but if he moves, more wobbling and flailing.

Im not quite sure what to do, so right now he is wrapped up and sitting in a laundry basket in a dark room. It’s night time anyway so I’ll let him sleep it off. I’ve consulted a trusted facebook group to get opinions and I’ll do another assessment tomorrow. I didn’t want to splint anything because.. I just don’t know what to splint, exactly. When I felt around and moved everything.. he never acted like he was in pain.

Bad time to be a new chicken mom! But we will see.. so..there’s that.

Hope you guys had a bangin’ 4th of July!

Well, my luck hasn’t been so great.

We started out with 14 chickens from the original flock and added in 10 others. This was actually more than anticipated know, chicken math.

First, we lost a Silkie. No sign of entrance, a struggle.. nothing. It just vanished into thin air. By that, I mean a hawk likely got it. Afterwards, 3 more silkies left the farm to move on to their new home.

Right after that, I won a raffle for 9 Olive Eggers! How exciting! Except she had an issue with 2 and sent 9 OE’s and 2 Svart Hona’s. I thought the Svart Honas were creepy, I won’t lie. But they’re so pretty! Anyway. Two little chicks perished on the way to our house and one was really weak. The weak one made it about two days and passed as well. I did all I could and he looked like he was improving but… no. This was the first time I’d actually lost one and it really sucked. I felt like a bad chicken mom. So we’re down to 8 babies.

The Silkies ( and 3 OE’s) were traded for 4 Americuana’s and a Lavendar Orpington!

Confused yet? Now we are at 6 originals, 3 Silkies, 3 OEs, 4 Americauna’s, 2 Svart Honas, and a Lavendar Orpington.

One of my Americauna’s just…dropped dead out of nowhere. Cue extreme guilt. I talked to the girl I did the trade with (she also got some) and hers of the same color did as well..and I know she’s a good chicken momma. was something with them that was already an issue I guess. Still sucks.

About a week or 2 later, I noticed another one of my Americauna’s developed scissor beak and it was bad. She was eating and drinking pretty good though, I kept an eye on her. Seemed happy as a little lark. Dropped dead.

Cue more guilt. Do I even want chickens anymore? They’re just going to die.

Husband gave me a pep talk and I snapped out of it. Now, I have the 6 originals, 3 Silkies, 3 OE’s, 2 Americauna’s, 2 Svart Honas, and the Lavendar Orpington. Everyone now seems happy..and mostly healthy. One of my OE’s hasn’t really grown in size but is getting her feathers in. I guess she’s just going to be a runt? But everyone else is good. The little ones got their outdoor area expanded recently. We’re in the planning stages of an upgrade for the big guys.

That’s all for now! Have a great day!

Happy Mother’s  Day!!

I just want to say that I hope all of you moms out there had a great day. Mom’s with angel babies, step babies, adopted babies, fur babies, chicken babies, dads having to play the part of moms, and everyone in between.

I got yesterday “off.” Matthew and Randy went to his dad’s and stayed the night. I ran around town a little bit and had ice cream for dinner. It was fabulous.

Today while we were all outside visiting and doing whatever (Matthew was burning cardboard), Lil B got out. Not really sure how that happened, either. Thankfully none of the dogs were around. Matthew spotted him and let him back in. Said he was at the gate trying to get back in.  Atleast he knew where he should go! As pessimistic as it might seem, I bet I lose 3 before a years time. I love my chichic’s  but we’re out in the country. It’s bound to happen.

Also! I’m pretty excited at the prospect of getting 3 English Lavendar Orpingtons and a Black Copper Maran hen! A friend hollered at me today about them. If it works out I’ll get them next week!!

Alright, sleepy time. Take care!
